April 9th 2010

On 9th April 2010, Our Rotarian Ramachandran addressed our members. The title was rather confusing before the meeting. But by the time the meeting came to an end, many members understood "Don't Land in Trouble". His address covered vital aspects related to verifying the authenticity of property documents. Being a vital subject in todays world, Rtn.Ramachandran's speech was well received.



April 2nd 2010

Rtn.Dr.Kasirajan's daughter Dr.Lakshmi Priya addressed our club on a simple, but very important topic "Sleep". Introducing the speaker, Dr.Kasirajan recollected the importance of sleep disorders. Dr.Lakshmi Priya holds four MD degrees from American Medical Council. She explained the solutions towards the problem with powerpont presentation. With sleep disorder being a common among indians, the speech was very useful.


March 26th 2010

Rtn.PP.Manimozhian is known for his generosity and kind heartedness. His Eloquence and expertise in Tamil literature especially Thirukural is known to almost every tamilian. He has made it an habit to celebrate his birthday each year with all our Rotarians by hosting them on a Friday nearest to his Birthday. And it has become an important event in our Rotary club to have this event as a joint meeting with Inner Wheel Club of Madurai City.

This year too the celebrations were flying high. With Rotarians and friends pouring in his home, Rtn.Manimozhian had made elaborate arrangement. His entire family was busy receiving guests and taking care of them. Mr.Ilasaisundaram (Former Director All India Radio) addressed the gathering. The meeting ended with sumptous dinner.

Rtn.Durairaj was the acting President since President chandran was out of station.

March 19th 2010

This is a memorable meeting. Our club gathered on the 39th Meeting to formally extend a "Send off" to the GSE Team headed by our Rotarian Natananagopal. Rtn.Natan along with his entire team of four professionals addressed our members and explained their plans and preparations ahead of their trip to Texas, USA.

March 12th 2010 : Vocational Excellence Award

Vocational Excellence Award:
Every year our club presents to individuals who have contributed outstandingly in their vocations. This year our club recognized three professionals :

Mr.V.Ponramu - Inspector of Police receiving the Vocational Excellence Award as Best Police Officer


- Dr.S.Anbu : Former Dean, Horticulture College, Periyakulam being honoured.
- Honouring Mrs.Soma Basu with Vocational Excellence Award in the Field of Journalism

It is a fact that many of us think that good education is available only at Metropolitan locations. This theory would be proved wrong by Mrs.V.Shyamala who runs Oxford matriculation school at Sivagangai. Known for quality education and good results, she is the apt person to adderss our club meeting on "Equity Education". Brought up in Pune, Mrs.Shyamal moved over to sivagangai after her marriage and went on to establish this quality education. She concluded by saying the Equity in Education is certainly a Boon.

February is designated for World Understanding in the Rotary Calender. The speaker of the evening Rtn.Dr.Krishnamoorthy of Meenakshi Mission hospital spoke on "Ellam Inbamayam". The casual speech did create good interaction at the end of the meeting.

It has been one of the lively meetings that we had in this rotary year. Mr.R.Vaidhyanathan, rated as one of the Top-10 professors in IIM-Bangalore, address our members. Infact Maditssia President requested our club and asked us to conduct the meeting as a joint meeting with their association, since it would benefit more people.

Though Mr.Vaidhyanathan's speech was filled with wit and humour, it had indepth meaning. His 45 minutes lecture on "Real Engines of India's Economic Growth" threw light on various known and unknown facts about the Indian economy. His instantaneous correlation of economic data with real life situation was much helpful in better understanding. Close to 250 members attended this meeting and benefited.

It has been a sad moment in the history of our club. Our Senior Rtn.PHF.AR.Venkatraman passed away on 10th Feb 2010. Rtn.Venkatraman is the Director of Lakshmi Vilas Bank. Known for his simplicity and magnanimity, his loss is irreparable to his family, to rotary and to society at large.

In our regular meeting on 12th Feb 2010, our members after observing silence proceeded to his home to express our heartfelt condolence to his family.

Living Close to Nature : was addressed by Dr.G.Shanmugam, Retired Cancer Biologist from MKU. Dr.Shanmugams speech on the effectiveness of "Patti Vaidhyam" did bring lots of cheers to our members. Having suffered from kidney failure, Dr.Shanmugam did prescribe treatment with Ginger and Turmeric and did get the kidney disorder cured. He is now living without any dialisis. His quick review on various natural cure methods did kindle the interest among our members.

It has been the Talk of the Town. Our Clubs participation in the donation of Fully Automated Anaesthesia Stations, supplied by Rotary Club of Carmathen UK to Government Rajaji Hospitals in Madurai, is well appreciated by Rotarians in and around the district.

We had organized for a face to face discussion with Rtn.DK.Raja who was instrumental in realizing this dream projects. His lively narration of the various hurdles in materializing the project for a good cause was admirable. He appreciated the perseverent efforts of our club, particularly IPP Rtn.Viswanathan in fighting with the customs department in India. He was happy with the end results. He hoped that Our club would participate in future projects like the present one.

Incoming President Rtn.Nandalal retured to India with lots of good memories about his visit to Rotary Headquarters in Chicago. His speech on "My Experience at Rotary International Headquarters". Aided with Powerpoint presentation, Rtn.Nandalal's running commentary did make many of the members feel as if there were in RI Headquarters. Good beginning for any incoming president.

New Year is special for everyone. We had Dr.Sathiyavan speak on "Healthy Living : Note for Senior Citizens". His lively speech on food habits, daily excercises etc was well received by Rotarians. Inspite of the new year party on 31st December night, many rotarians turned up for the meeting and shared the New Year Message.

Prof.Dr.BM.Kumaraswamy from Shimoga, Karnataka addressed our club meeting on "Kautilya's Arthasasthra : Relevance to Modern World". With his extensive research on the subject, Dr.Kumaraswamy was instant in corelating present day events with Kautilya's Principles. Inspite of his age, Dr.Kumaraswamy took lots of pain in travelling down to Madurai to address our club. The meeting hall was jam packed, with lots of visitors too.

An important event in every clubs itenary is the Governor Visit to the Club. This year our beloved governor Rtn.Purushothaman visited our club on 18th December 2009. After series of activities from morning, and the club assembly by afternoon, we had the family meeting with the Governor. With an attendance of close to 100, the meeting hall was full. District Governor appreciated the contributions of our club and wished we bring more laurels to our district.

We had a young Horticulturist from the Horticulture College in Periyakulam. Dr.K.R.Rajadurai who is Assistatn professor of Floriculture addressed our club on 11th December 2009 on "House Plants". He descibed the science of Indoor Garden and Indoor Plants. Aided by Power Point Presentation, Dr.Rajadurai did explain the various methods of growing indoor plants and the parameters to take care for an indoor garden like sunlight, humidity etc.

On seeing the topic few Rotary Anns did turn up for the meeting. At the end, there was a busy enquiry with Dr.K.R.Rajadurai on creating Indoor Gardens. Our Bulletin Editor Rtn.V.Sampath who is a veteran Horticulturist was instrumental in toeing Dr.Rajadurai for the meeting.

Just like Spiderman in Reel life, we have the Policeman in Real life. None other than Mr.Kumaravel, Assistant commisioner of Police-Intelligence wing-Madurai, would have been apt for the topic. He address our club on "Your Friendly Neighbourhood Policeman". Mr.Kumaravel known for his honesty and helping tendency did explain the various efforts taken by his department in ensuring safe living. He did elaborate the work flow in police department and the systemic approach in sorting our issues and bringing justice. His confident speech would have brought some solace to those who worry about the safety of Indian Cities.

We had a wonderful talk on 20th November 2009 by Mr.Aristotle, General Manager, Plantations at Emami India Ltd. When an Industry expert like Mr.Aristotle speaks in his area of expertise, it is a pleasure listing to. With energy crisis gripping the world, Mr.Aristotle speech on "Alternative Energy Sources" was appropriate. He explained the various efforts taken in India to battle with Energy Crisis. His presentation was more like Project report or Viability report with all statistics on growing fuel rich plants to extract Biofuels.

Our special thanks to Rtn.Natanagopal who was instrumental in roping in the speaker Mr.Aristotle who happens to be on wheels visiting the 70,000 acres of farm in India and 1,00,000 acres in Ethiopia. The outcome of the meeting could be gauged by the fact that, few rotarians who could not make up for the meeting regreted for having missed such beautiful topic.

Prof.RM.Pitchappan, Father of our Program Coordinator Rtn.P.Ramaswamy and Rtn.P.Valliappan, addressed our club on "Genographic". Prof.Pitchappan after serving the Madurai Kamaraj University till retirement is currently working with National Geographic on Project "Genographic". They intend to trace the "Journey of Man" from the birthplace of Manking - Africa. Prof.Pitchappans crucial evidence that early nomadic man too route all along the costal route of India to Australia. His brief presentation followed by Audio Visual did kindle the interest among our Rotarians to know more about the "Jouney of Man". Prof.Pitchappan did explain how they can determine the origin of every man by latest technology.

Hosting a website would have been a dream a few years back. But with the advent of blogspot, anyone and everyone can dream of hosting a website and posting messages, absolutely free. And our club is no exception.

On the very first meeting, Our Program Coordinator Rtn.Ramsamy promised to host a blogspot. The dream was realized in the next one month. The website was up and running from August 2009.

Meeting on 30th october was dedicated for a Live Demo of our website. Rtn.Ramsamy spoke on "All about our Website". With Live net connection, various information hosted on our webstie was explained with running commentry by Rtn.Ramsamy.

Many of the members threw in suggestions for betterment of the website. Atlast the world can see the happening at Rotary Club of Madurai West.

If festive seasons start, the attendance in club usually goes down. This is very true for Diwali.

This year, to break this tradition, we had an intresting, hot topic on current affairs : Black Money. Mr.R.Sundaram, Visting Professor at Indian School of Business, Hyderabad spoke on the subject. Many Rotarians had no other option but to squeeze in and listen to the speech. Many lesser known facts did raise the eyebrows of the way Black Money is being managed in India.

"Good News about Cancer" was given by Dr.Muthukumaraswamy, Senior Oncologist in Madurai. He explained various advancements in Cancer Tretement and eventual cure. His optimistic speech on Cancer management was very informative for lot many of the Rotarians, since Cancer is the next biggest health ailment next only to Heart attack.

Being Gandhi Jeyanthi we had Mr.M.Mariappan, Vice President of Gandhi Museum speak to us on "Gandhiji's Contribution to World". Mr.Mariappan did elaborate the respect India gets in the Global Platform for Gandhiji's Non-Violence principles. Rtn.RM.Subramanian introduced the chief guest.
