RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards – is one of Rotary’s Internationally important program that endeavors to empower youth in the age group of 18 to 23 years by giving them intensive leadership training with a balance of educational and recreational inputs.
This year’s Camp began with a desire to grow to matured adults, who will STRIVE TO SUCCEED to attempt at anything that is considered difficult or a threat so to convert them into oppurtunities. This was the theme of the Rotary Club of Madurai West’s RYLA 2011.
STRIVE TO SUCCEED:
The RYLA Chairman Rtn T.Ravee, welcomed the participants at the beautiful Hillside Residential School of Mahatma Schools Group on Friday the 6th Jan 2011, for their three day camp and further presented them the camp rules. Rtn.PP.NAN Narayenen emphasized on the need “STRIVE TO SUCCEED” & grow, in order to become wholesome person and to beat the competition in today’s world.
The 15th annual RYLA camp of Rotary club of Madurai west was attended by 64 students (40 boys and 24 girls) of arts, science, commerce, management, engineering, agricultural & hotel management from 12 colleges.
RYLA team was exposed to a variety of training tips in an interactive mode ranging from knowing the self and goal setting to solving problems and cherishing values. The participants were exposed to effective presentations by eminent trainers, speakers, professionals and entrepreneurs. The students were also directed to room works at night for self portrait in chart and journal writing of their views on the topics discussed in the day. The presentations were interspersed with games and energizers. On top of everything, there was camp fire with college wise entertainment with yoga. In addition, there was an interaction with the overseas students – undergraduates who have come to Madurai on a project to study the teaching methodologies and the role played by the teachers at the school level.
The first of the fourteen sessions was on “Know YOURSELF”.The facilitator Dr.K.Alex from St.Joseph’s College Trichy made the participants to realize their own strengths and the ways to develop those qualities thereby to make the particular individual excel in their career. The points made by him were “How to OVERCOME SHYNESS”, “the method of building your SELF ESTEEM.
The second session “GOAL SETTING & TIME MANAGEMENT” – Rtn.PP,NAN Narayenen was the facilitator at this session. He underlined that after they looked within and identified their technical skills, soft skills, they must begin to chart their GOAL through the various process namely: Personal, Positive, Measurable, Realistic, Adaptable, Time Bound, Constantly worked upon, Accommodative, Prioritized and well Balanced. Thereafter made the participants to realize the need and the importance of time management through games & plays followed by interaction with the overseas students who are to India on a project studying the teaching methodologies in India being the third session.
The fourth session was handled by Prof.Dr.Lawerance in which the message that are communicated through the various body postures was described to the participants. He further stressed the importance of “BODY LANGUAGE” that goes with the communication made by the participants which is viewed seriously by the reviewers.
The fifth session was combined with the regular weekly meeting in which the famous Tamil writer Mr.Thangam Moorthy took part and addressed the Rylarians on the topic - “Role of Rotary in shaping the youth” with lots of jokes, stories that really kindled the thoughts of the participants.
The sixth session was YOGA with laughing therapy handled by Mr.Jeyasundaram, Yoga instructor, Gandhi Museum, who showed the way to the students to “FACE THE WORLD” with courage fighting stress, controlling emotions and avoiding depression. He quoted extensively case histories of students who suffered with these ailments and how they had overcome successfully.
The seventh session was EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE handled by Dr.Lathi, Holy Cross College, Trichy in which she made the participants to realize the various concepts of emotional intelligence and the ways and means to tackle them to ease the situation crisis. She described lots of success stories which were on account of understanding the situation and carrying out the tasks to overcome the hurdles.
The next session was ACHIEVING SUCCESS handled by Mrs.Girija Sathyashankar in which she described the methodology of the tortoise way to achieve success. She made the participants to realize the inherent strength in this methodology and created an awareness.
The next session was COUNSELLING handled by Rtn.Dr.Dheep & Rtn.A’.Dr.Sudha Dheep. To have open interaction with the counselors, the boy Rylarians were assembled with Dr.Dheep & girls with Dr.Sudha Dheep. There was open interaction in both the groups eliminating the inhabitations of the Rylarians which provided a good opportunity to get their adolescent ideas and thoughts clarified.
Rtn.Srinivasan Alagarsamy & Mr.Nawas Babu were the panelists in which they briefly explained the students what the industry is looking for from the students when they attend for job / career interviews. Lot of questions were replied by them which the students wanted to get it clarified about the job opportunities in the challenging environment in this Face to Face session with the stalwarts in the industry.
The next session was YOGA - Mind & Body handled by Dr.Yoga & Pranayama, who showed the way to the students to have a good health by practicing breathing exercises and meditations. She explained further to the students the advantages of this exercises that helps to keep their minds tuned to face the challenges in this competitive environment.
Rtn.PP.S.Natanagopal was the facilitator of the fourteenth session in which he shared about “STRATEGIC THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING” by giving exercises to the participants and compared their solutions in which a way that made the participants about he various methods of solving the problems. He described the concepts of strategic thinking and further made them to realize the need and the importance of strategic thinking to have its benefits reaped.
Rtn. NAN Narayenen was the facilitator at the last session along with Rtn.Chitra Ganapathy. This was on FAMILY VALUES in which he emphasized the need to realise and the benefits that derive there from which are essential for every one. He further exhorted the students to inculcate the values of life and strive to be great to succeed and become great persons as good citizens of the society. This was followed by Rtn.Chitra Ganapathy who summed up the entire three days event.
On the second day of the THREE DAY CAMP a special Inspirational Address was given by Mrs. Premalatha Panneerselvam, the Senior Principal of MAHATMA SCHOOLS helping them to understand their roles in their family, society and country as a whole. She further explained them about the steps that are required to be taken by them to excel in their life for a bright future. In addition, she narrated them the stories of her successful students who have settled in various parts of the world.
On the third day of the THREE DAY CAMP, a key note address was given by Mr.Arvind Srinivasan, Administrator of Arvind Eye Hospitals, Madurai on the theme “STRIVE TO SUCCEED” by narrating out the various incidents which made the participant realize that success will be attained only by constant efforts. He further made the patients about the challenges to which they are thrown in the present scenario.
The Camp was not all work and no play. There were: Group games by Rtn. Nargis Farouk, Camp Fire lit by Rtn President K.R.Rajagovindasamy along with his spouse Rtn.Ann.Asha. In addition, there was an interaction with the overseas students – undergraduates who have come to Madurai on a project to study the teaching methodologies and the role played by the teachers at the school level.
The valedictory address was given by Rtn.G.Muruganandam, District RYLA Chairman, RI Dist 3000 & Special awards like Mr. RYLA, Ms RYLA, Popular Rylarian were distributed by him to different participants based on their performance at the three days sessions.
Mr.Arunagiri.J of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College & Ms.SIVAGAMI.M of Agricultural College were being crowned as Mr.RYLA & Ms.RYLA.
Mr.A.Keethivasan of Agricultural Colelge & Ms.M.Ranji of Madurai Sivakasi Nadar College are Popular Rylarians.
The overall arrangements were made by the RYLA Chairman Rtn T.Ravee with Rtn.PP.Khursheed Majeed as the Camp Commandant &. Rtn. Chitra Ganapahty as the Pilot Faculty. The camp was steered eloquently with the full support of Rtn.PP.NAN Narayenen.
